MicroSave is to:

  • Work on savings product development as part of a learning-by-doing agenda;
  • Disseminate information on savings-related issues to microfinance institutions(MFIs) in Africa;
  • Enhance the capacity of local service providers to provide training and technical assistance on market research methods to examine clients' needs for savings products;
  • Prepare training curricula on savings product design, costing/pricing, pilot testing and evaluation.
In order to undertake these activities, MicroSave seeks five collaborative partner MFIs who meet the following criteria:

  • Clear commitment to and progress towards achieving sustainability;
  • Three or more years of operations
  • effective accounting and management systems;
  • Interested in/committed to designing and implementing high-quality savings products for poor people.
These partner MFIs will benefit by:
  • Developing staff skills in market and client perspective research techniques, saving products and conduction of cost-analysis of providing saving exercises;
  • Designing and testing new client- responsive savings services;
  • Receiving extensive local consultant input in support of the action research programme;
  • Developing links as partners of the MicroSave- Africa programme;
  • Receiving advice and some assistance with ownership, governance and management structures;
  • Receiving increased profile through the Micro Save-Africa dissemination activities.
Together, MicroSave and its partners will:
  • Conduct market and client need/perspective research to examine the demand for savings products amongst the MFIs' clients and non-clients;
  • Design cost and price savings products in response to the market research conducted;
  • Pilot-test, monitor and evaluate (including cost analysis) the savings products
