In Bolivia, Kenya and Colombia, the experiences of regulating MFIs within the existing regulatory framework, either as a commercial bank or as a finance company, are illustrated. Mismatches between the standard regulatory framework and the provision of microfinance services are highlighted
In the cases of Peru, West Africa and Bolivia, insight is provided into initial attempts to create special categories of laws designed specifically for microfinance institutions
Examples from South Africa and the Philippines demonstrate a learning process for MFIs and policy makers in order to create standards for the local microfinance industry
Conclusions are drawn on regulatory and supervisory approaches given the unique characteristics of MFI institutions.
