What is M-CRIL’s role in the Asian microfinance sector?
This document presents Micro-Credit Ratings International Limited’s (M-CRIL) activities in Asia and the trends that are observed in the Asian microfinance sector.
The presentation highlights M-CRIL’s:
- Status and activities undertaken in India and Asia;
- Suitability as a rating agency, which include:
- Recognition as a specialist in the Asian microfinance sector;
- Dedicated and experienced team of 10 analysts;
- Established credibility with investors/ donors and lenders.
- Achievements;
- Ratings conducted till October 2004;
- Publications and documents contributing to analysis of sector performance, experience sharing.
Further, the presentation highlights the advantages of ratings, as they:
- Enable the identification of microfinance institutions (MFIs) that are either credit-worthy or are potentially sustainable;
- Attract investment in MFIs;
- Contribute to capacity enhancement by:
- Providing substantive feedback on MFI strengths and weaknesses in the key areas of performance assessment,
- Comparison MFI performance with key industry performance benchmarks.
- Enable progressive and concerned MFI managements to:
- Undertake substantive systemic improvements;
- Approach concerned donors and lenders to provide capacity building support.
Finally, the presentation recommends that in order to be efficient, the Asian MFIs need to:
- Improve staff productivity;
- Reduce operating expenses;
- Implement better and efficient management information systems;
- Deploy funds in portfolio and investments;
- Be assured of a more supportive environment;
- Have the freedom to set interest rates in a competitive environment.
