How did KRIBCHO contribute to the village committee of Patherkata?

This paper describes the achievements of the Patherkata Village Committee. The paper describes Patherkata as one of the remotest villages in Orissa. It had the following features:

  • Inaccessible by road;
  • Most villagers illiterate;
  • Agriculture the primary occupation, followed by wage labor;
  • No assured irrigation facility;
  • Paddy the major crop;
  • Villagers migrating to towns in search of labor.

The paper states that the staff members of KRIBCHO motivated the villagers to form a committee to undertake developmental works in the village. The main types of developmental initiatives chosen were:

  • Community Based Natural Resources Management;
  • Common Property Resource Management.

The paper then details the developmental works undertaken by the village committee with the aid of KRIBCHO, which contributed funds, technical expertise and training:

  • Planting cashew on 16 acres of unused land; growing green gram and red gram along with the cashew;
  • Undertaking a Eucalyptus plantation;
  • Starting a pisciculture unit ;
  • Constructing a community hall;
  • Initiating cultural activities.

The paper concludes with the details of equipment rented out by KRIBCHO that helped the village committee generate substantial supplementary income.
