Should central banks in developing countries actively assist microfinance and is it their function?
The publication looks at the role of central banks in country contexts and examines:- their influence on the speed with which the microfinance industry can grow
- the directions and quality of the growth
- how central banks can support development of sustainable microfinance
The studies found evidence to suggest that their operations of central banks for microfinance development have varied significantly over the years. Future operations of central banks depend on- the current stage of microfinance development
- the structure of the industry and the directions in which it is moving
- the institutional capacity of the central banks
They conclude that central banks need to pay more attention than in the past to regulation and supervision and especially where the microfinance industry is becoming more formalised and embedded.
