What’s new with microinsurance?
MICROINSURANCE is a quarterly newsletter issued by The Working Group on Micro insurance. This particular edition comprised of the following articles:
- Regulation and supervision in micro insurance: Discusses the pros and cons of regulation in the field of micro insurance;
- Micro insurance regulation in India:
- States that the Indian Government has been very active in the field of regulating micro insurance and
- Discusses two documents published by The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA): “Obligations of Investors to Rural Social Sector” and “Concept Paper on Need for Regulations on Micro Insurance in India”.
- A case study of the “Centre for Agricultural Research and Development (CARD)” in the Philippines:
- New governmental regulations have made it possible for Mutual Benefit Associations (MBAs), like CARD, to sell directly to its members, but the tax burden made it abandon the effort.
- An insurance product – “Takaful”: An Islamic insurance that operates like a cooperative with added restrictions on investments and more flexibility in capital formation.
