Finding the appropriate insurance products
This is the quarterly newsletter of CGAP initiated working group on micro insurance. It consists of the following articles:
- The Risks of Crop Insurance;
- Case study: COLUMNA;
- Case study: SERVIPERUPERU.
The first article explores different management techniques and crop insurance alternatives available to the developing countries to manage and mitigate risk. Traditional subsidized crop insurance system is not sustainable in low-income countries because of:
- Serious fiscal constraints;
- Weaknesses in information and legal infrastructure.
The article concludes that the question of how to design an efficient and cost-effective risk management program remains unanswered.
The second article is about COLUMNA, a Guatemala based insurance company that offered the popular Group life insurance product:
- To cover funeral services;
- To cover accidental death or disability.
The third article is a case study of insurance products for the microeconomic sectors in Peru:
- Creation of SEGUROSCOOP cooperative insurer;
- The main target market: population with low economic resources.
- The main services offered:
- Microinsurance product;
- Funeral and health services;
- A fixed payment of expenses.
- The main obstacles included:
- Unstable income of target group;
- Costly project.
